I needed to do something. And quickly. The longest final I called Farnborough Radar (the local air traffic control), announced my problem and asked for an immediate steer to Thruxton. I also requested Thruxton’s radio frequency. My attention was riveted on the oil indications and flying the aeroplane. I didn’t want to be mucking about with maps and books. There was no reply from Thruxton’s radio (it happened to be a race day, the airfield was closed due to car racing on the perimeter track). But I was landing there anyway, car racing or not.
The pilot further stated that his estimated fuel consumption rate did not account for the fact that the engine had been upgraded from carburetted to fuel-injected. During the first leg of the crosscountry flight, the aircraft was on approach to the planned fuel-stop airport; the pilot performed a go-around as the aircraft ballooned during the flare. During the go-around, at about 500ft agl, the engine lost all power and the pilot performed a forced landing into a field. During the landing, the aircraft struck an unoccupied house and came to rest on its right side.
So Lou – my wife and also a pilot – and I drove to the airfield which housed the engineering company. The plan was for me to fly Indy back to Henstridge, her Somerset home, while Lou would drive back. I’d be sitting at home with my feet up and quaffing a leisurely beer long before Lou had completed even half the return journey. As it was a Saturday, the maintenance company which had serviced Indy was closed, so I collected the key from the control tower as arranged. All went well with the pre-flight check, the take-off and the climb.
