Manners both arise from and are sustained by social change. Even if America did not have the “best part” of the Old World population or a “native aristocracy,” the increasing gentility of the middle class in England ensured that there were enough well-read immigrants who were familiar with the classics of courtesy literature, and the possibility for social mobility in the first several generations of colonial settlement ensured a lively interest in pursuing the arts of genteel expression. Books on manners were being read in the first settlements in the New World.

Never trouble your self about those Faults in them, which you know Age will cure. And therefore want of well-fashion’d Civility in the Carriage, whilst Civility is not wanting in the Mind (for their you must take care to plant it early) should be the Parent’s least care, whilst they are young. If his tender Mind be fill’d with a Veneration for his Parents and Teachers, which consists in Love and Esteem, and a fear to offend them; and with Respect and Good Will to all People; that respect will of it self teach those ways of Expressing it, which he observes most acceptable.

These divisions are problematic because they overlap too often; Chesterfield’s Letters, for example, could be described as parental advice, a policy work, or a civility text. I prefer a division of courtesy works roughly based on chronological appearance. What can be called courtly literature appears up to nearly the middle of the seventeenth century, after which polite or civil behavior distinguished the form until about 1770, when etiquette began to take its modern form. Courtly literature stressed precedence, the qualities of the true nobleman, and the communal meals associated with court life.
